COMMUNITY FOOD BANK
The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona located at 3003 S. Country Club Road, offers volunteering to individuals as well as large groups. As a volunteer at this facility you are able pack and sort boxes of food for families and people in need, help with the local farmer's garden, and also help out during special events like Christmas and Thanksgiving. MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS
Make Way For Books is an organization founded in southern Arizona to promote the joy of reading to young children. By developing a love for reading at an early age, this group hopes to increase the success of the youth in this community. The volunteer opportunities for high school students are: children's book drives, office work and arts and crafts projects, sorting/cleaning books, and acting out stories for the younger kids. There is no set time commitment, but some training is needed, which MWFB does provide. If you are under the age of 18, a parent is required to sign a Volunteer Waiver form. MWFB is located at 3595 E. CASA MARIA
Casa Maria is a Catholic organization devoted to acts of mercy (feeding and clothing those in need, visiting the ill, etc.), voluntary poverty, pacifism, and the search of justice for the poor. Volunteers are needed to help in the kitchen every morning from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. If you can chop vegetables, make sandwiches, and bag lunches your help is needed! Casa de los Niños promotes child well-being and family stability in the Tucson community. Programs and services include parent education classes, the Tucson Safe Baby program, a crisis shelter, foster care, family visitation, and behavioral health services. Volunteer opportunities include assisting with administrative duties, child care, or tutoring. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age and some positions require an application process. Volunteers are asked to make a six month commitment, working at least three hours per week. Casa de los Niños is located at 1101 N. 4th Ave. (Speedway and 4th Ave.). THE SALVATION ARMY
The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the Universal Christian Church. Its mission is to preach the gospel of the love of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Programs include an adult rehabilitation center, hospitality house shelter, emergency disaster services, and numerous community centers. Volunteer opportunities include: during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays to set up, serve and dish out food, clean up, and decorate for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals; and food drives and toy drives. RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Arizona, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), provides comfort and support to families and children facing serious illness or injury. The Ronald McDonald House provides a “Home Away from Home” for families who must travel to Tucson for medical care. The House serves over 600 families per year from communities throughout Southern Arizona, as well as the surrounding region. Volunteer opportunities include answering telephones, greeting families and visitors, making up rooms so they are ready for new families, organizing kitchens, organizing playroom, storing and organizing donations, assisting with special projects, and restocking linens and supplies. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. The Ronald McDonald House is located at 3838 N. Campbell Ave. (between Prince & Roger). GIRLS ON THE RUN
Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity-based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-8th grades. The program teaches life skills through dynamic interactive lessons and running games, culminating with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. Volunteer opportunities include Jr. Helper (ages 13+), Jr. Coach (ages 16+), and Assistant Coach (ages 18+). Girls on the Run is a bi-weekly 10-week after school program and there is typically a fall and spring program. Girls on the Run operates at various schools in Tucson. GAP MINISTRIES
GAP Ministries is 501c3 nonprofit social service agency that exists to “stand in the gap for those in need.” Services include residential SPLASH homes for foster children, the MERGE independent living program, Backpack-2-School, and Holiday of Hope. Volunteer opportunities include: administrative assistance, processing and sorting donations at the warehouse, sorting and stocking food boxes, painting and grounds work, food preparation, and special events. DIAPER BANK OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA
The Diaper Bank of Southern Arizona exists to provide “diapers for children and adults through community partners" and envision a community “where every diaper need is met.” Volunteers serve in a variety of positions including providing much needed assistance with inventory control and diaper sorting in the warehouse, occasional events and speaking opportunities, office assistance in the form of recruiting and coordinating volunteers, and most important, with daily administrative duties. The area of greatest need is for community members to hold diaper drives in their schools, clubs, places of worship, and workplaces. Volunteers must be at least 14-years old. SOUTHERN ARIZONA VA HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
SERVE- Students Volunteering for Veterans is the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) youth volunteer program designed to enhance the volunteer experience for our community’s youth, VA staff and most importantly, SAVAHCS Veteran patients. This program is open to youth applicants ages 14-18. The 2016 SERVE application packages will be available in the Volunteer Office, Bldg. 58 after January 4, 2016. The SERVE Program is an eight week program, based on the area schools’ calendars and summer breaks. The SAVAHCS SERVE Program is an opportunity for selected students to gain valuable work and life experience while serving our Nation’s Veterans. There will be a limited number of youth placements available. The SERVE Program application package will include an essay and written recommendations. Top applicants will be invited for an interview. Selected students and their parent/guardian will be required to attend one of two orientations offered. Students must be available a minimum of six weeks to be eligible to participate.
